just visiting

I have a crazy idea. So I'm just throwing it out there.

There is a Libraries Digital Conservation conference in San Francisco that I really want to attend October 5-6, then APE takes place October 17-18.

Could I just...go there? And stay for a few weeks? And just bum around? What would I even do there for 2 weeks? I don't know anybody in San Francisco. I could fly out and rent a car. It wouldn't be so bad.

I am almost determined to do this. Is anything else going on in October on the west coast?

Shaenon and I are in San Francisco. I don't think anyone's called dibs on our apartment for APE weekend yet, but we can probably spare some crash space for a few days in October.

Hooray! I wouldn't want to impose, but a day or two would be very generous. I will let you know if I make plans to be around SF this fall.

Thanks!

Sounds like fun! The San Francisco cell of the Cartoonist Conspiracy is always very active & will have a presence at APE, I'm sure... I can get you in touch with them if you want me to. Just drop me an email.

Hooray! Thanks, Steve. Your letter of recommendation would be golden.

Sounds good! Just email me whenever you want me to send it.

Yesss! There is so much to do, I'm sure you'd have fun!

I just wrote this for a friend who is visiting in a few months:

spend time exploring golden gate park, just walk into a thicket of trees and see where it takes you.. and visit north beach, the neighborhood where the beat poets hung out (especially in two bars, vesuvio and specs, close to city lights bookstore, there is so much history here) ... and the haight for lots of dirty hippie goodness, and amoeba records, and the most awesome crafts/costume shop called mendels ... and the 5-story rasputin music store, downtown on powell st (riding the tiny elevator is an experience).. and the 16th and mission area for wonderful book shops (my favorite is adobe books, on 16th) .... there is also a spectacular HUGE book store called green apple books, on clement street... and of course, go to fisherman's wharf / pier 39 for the sea lions and the clam chowder and the most amazing delicious sugar mini-doughnuts and the sock shop.. and ghirardelli square for free chocolates, and there is also a really wonderful vintage shop near the chocolate store, i think it's on the 2nd level of the same building - it's really neat, i spent hours in there one day just browsing through stacks of old postcards.... and visit ocean beach, go at night time for the bonfires... and walk down macondray lane ... and be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. :)

also here are some October festivals/events: http://san.francisco.eventguide.com/annual_events_overview.html#oct

I realize that I am kind of a random person from the internet, but... You can crash on my couch!

So generous! Thanks for all the good information. I will consider these options as I plan my grand tour of the west coast.

ALSO, Lovefest is on Oct. 3rd... it's a huge all-day dance party with crazy costumes and it's awesome. :)
